Makes me twitch.

According to you
I’m stupid,
I’m useless,
I can’t do anything right.
According to you
I’m difficult,
hard to please,
forever changing my mind.
I’m a mess in a dress,
can’t show up on time,
even if it would save my life.
According to you. According to you.

But according to him
I’m beautiful,
incredible,
he can’t get me out of his head.
According to him
I’m funny,
irresistible,
everything he ever wanted.
Everything is opposite,
I don’t feel like stopping it,
so baby tell me what I got to lose.
He’s into me for everything I’m not,
according to you.

According to you
I’m boring,
I’m moody,
you can’t take me any place.
According to you
I suck at telling jokes cause I always give it away.
I’m the girl with the worst attention span;
you’re the boy who puts up with it.
According to you. According to you.

But according to him
I’m beautiful,
incredible,
he can’t get me out of his head.
According to him
I’m funny,
irresistible,
everything he ever wanted.
Everything is opposite,
I don’t feel like stopping it,
so baby tell me what I got to lose.
He’s into me for everything I’m not,
according to you.

I need to feel appreciated,
like I’m not hated. oh– no–.
Why can’t you see me through his eyes?
It’s too bad you’re making me dizz-ay.

According to me
you’re stupid,
you’re useless,
you can’t do anything right.
But according to him
I’m beautiful,
incredible,
he can’t get me out of his head.
According to him
I’m funny,
irresistible,
everything he ever wanted.
Everything is opposite,
I don’t feel like stopping it,
baby tell me what I got to lose.
He’s into me for everything I’m not,
according to you. [you, you]
According to you. [you, you]

According to you
I’m stupid,
I’m useless,
I can’t do anything right.

I mean, really, if you’re in a position where some ass is calling you stupid and useless, the absolute last thing that should be running through your head is someone else who is probably telling you the same things the ass did when you first met.

The song should have ended:

According to me
I’m awesome,
amazing,
Fuck them if they can’t see that.
And according to me
I’m beautiful,
incredible,
I don’t need their kind of crap.
According to me
I’m funny,
irresistible,
everything they ever wanted.
Everything is opposite,
I don’t feel like stopping it,
so baby tell me what I got to lose.
You’re not worthy of wiping my ass,
according to me.

Or something along those lines ;)

Wow. I’m gonna not listen to that, after reading the lyrics. I’ll just be even more annoyed.

I would agree with that absolutely. She really isn’t ready for any other relationships anyway, and she needs one with herself first. Yep!

while i like your version better, i do like the song. i like the message that there is someone out there who can/will appreciate you; don’t hang around with asshats who don’t.

I get that, but its also about that cycle, and until she figures out if its a cycle or not, she needs to stay the hell away from “him.”

In my lyrical opinion, of course.

Oh my gosh, this is EXACTLY what I told my 20 yr. old daughter!!! Well, not those exact lyrics obviously, but I told her it should be “according to her” and not anyone else. So true!

Drill it into her head. Nobody ever deserves to be treated like that, and nobody deserves to have a song written about what an asshole they are.

    Good to see you!

I had the same thought as Scarlet – I think that it could be read as a pushback. The kind of verbal abuse that she is writing about is the kind that also frequently ends in “no one else would want you” so it is sort of powerful to say that someone else does. I think your version comes sometime after when she realizes that that strength comes from within her.

And I do agree, but damn. I’ve had my fair share of abuses and if any of them had said those things to me, point blank, I would have flipped them off as I jumped out the door.

I don’t like this song either. I’ve seen too many people believe the BS they’re fed by abusers. Having taken many years to get through my own issues, I just can’t think of this as a positive message.
