Its strange how a change in schedule can completely throw off one’s purpose, or online persona, as the case may be. My kids have been out of school for 2.5 weeks and in those 17 days, I have been a one-woman entertainment crew. I no longer have time to read or comprehend the news, I have very little to say outside of which playground we are at or how nice the pool is. While I am never not a mom, I have never intended to be a mommy blogger. Summer vacation is rapidly changing my tune.
I like mommy bloggers, don’t get me wrong. They make me laugh, or sometimes cry. I like their stories and that even through motherhood, they’re still using their voices and being heard. My POV is that while I’m a mom, I can have my kids and eat them too and still focus on the world beyond playdates and homework. But, its summer, and as much as I’d like to sit next to the lady on the bench and ask her thoughts about DC’s recognition of same-sex marriage… you know, maybe I should do that, just to see how fast she jumps up, grabs her kids and runs away from the crazy lady with the pirate purse. But, um, really… if some crazy lady with a pirate purse sat down next to you and started talking about politics, what would you do besides tell her that she should really be watching her kids and stop feeding them goldfish like they’re trained seals. Arf.
For now, my biggest decisions are whether or not to pack lunch or just a snack for our outings. My politically-savvy mind is full of “where is the next playground?” and “should I go to the farm today?” Motherhood still has a profound effect on our lives, whether we want to admit it or not, and there is nothing like an 11-week “break” to illustrate just how demanding this job can be. I have no doubt that when school starts again, I’m going to actually miss all of this quality time, too. I’m not cut out for homeschooling (kudos to those of you who are!) but I can see how it keeps families closer together.
I should get moving so we can head out on our latest adventure. More from the Melia Mommy Blog to come!
