Daily, I interact with over 100 women (that I know of). Granted, its mostly online, so its not a face-to-face interaction, but it works for me. I read forums, blogs, and social networking sites, studying the lives of these glorious ladies, learning that as different as we are, we all have a lot of similarities.

I have been following the struggle of an all-women site, www.alphawomen.com, and its recent “slap in the face” by another site, www.gammawomen.com. It seems that Gamma thinks that Alpha is promoting the wrong ideals, and therefore is wrong. Now, Gamma is headed by a corporation, which makes me twitch right off the bat. I think that in itself is metaphorically saying that women have to be owned by “stuff” in order to function. I’m just not the woman who says she has to have a certain label in order to have a happy life, so I run from corporate America.

I like AlphaWomen, there are some very smart ladies there and I always get a laugh or read something that makes me think. I’m a fan of the Alpha site, and the concept of the Alpha woman.

What is an Alpha Woman?
An Alpha Woman is a decision-maker who is committed to her goals and dreams. She may be opinionated and unafraid to speak her mind, but she is considerate, open-minded, and respectful of others. She is always ready to learn and willing to take on any challenge. Most importantly, she is dedicated to growing as a person, as a valuable and contributive member of society.

More than that, though, is the huge illustration that this situation provides – the unhappy woman and how she tears down other women. We just don’t have to be like that. There are hundreds of sites, groups or clubs, institutions of learning and success that focus on uplifting women, on making us whole and helping us see that we are more than credit cards and uteruses.

Women, eventually you will all have to see that our strength doesn’t come from knocking each other down, but from holding each other up. My homework for you is to figure out what it is about yourself that makes you tingle, and let me know.
