I’m busily sucking down a caramel frapp from my local Starbucks and reading all about bisexuality on the ‘net. This requires wading through dating sites, male fantasy blogs, a thousand “am I gay?” question/answer posts and surreptitiously trying to hide any images that might appear of vaginas in compromising positions. (I would hate to offend the teenagers at the next table!)

I had to refer back to an article I posted on a forum a few months ago: Bisexual women are not lesbians in which it states that “The study, published by the American Psychological Association, of 79 non-heterosexual women over 10 years found that bisexual women maintained a stable pattern of attraction to both sexes.

The reason I had to refer back was because in my online discovery mission tonight, I mostly came across opinions that bisexuality is either trendy, a transitional label between heterosexuality and homosexuality, a nice word for “promiscuity,” or just a load of crap. There was very little “yay, you’re bi!” commentary from either extreme of the sexuality spectrum. Granted, I was not exactly shocked by these opinions, but I am a little concerned with the perception of bisexuals. There are more sites for lesbians and homosexuals than for bisexuals of either gender.

If the APA says that bisexuality is a true sexual label, then what is the problem? Is it the fear of an un-label that gets people’s attention? Maybe its the anxiety that comes from having to compete for affection with both genders. Quelle salade! Quelle confusion!

So, am I gay? Am I trendy? Should I put down the frapp and go home? I just can’t decide!

I’m ready for your comments ;)

I think that bisexuals are viewed as a bit schizophrenic by straights and gays/ lesbians. We’re like second class citizens in both groups. Many straight people will view bisexuals as homosexual and therefore impose their prejudices on us, and many homosexuals have the attitude that bisexuals “aren’t real gays/lesbians”.
That’s right, we aren’t. We’re bisexual. The stigma of being a B in the LGBTQ community bugs me. For a population group that is fighting so hard for rights and acceptance, some of them can be extremely arrogant.

And I think much of that is why bisexuals counter their attacks with the “we’re more evolved, we can love anyone” argument.
